Date of filing

The date of filing accorded to applications filed in person at the EPO is the date on which they are handed in or posted in one of the EPO's automated mailboxes.

The date of filing accorded to applications sent by post or to those filed electronically or by fax is the date on which the application documents are received at the EPO, provided the documents comply with the requirements of Article 80 and Rule 40 EPC.

In the "Date of filing" field the default operator is OR. This means that you can enter up to ten dates simply separated by a space.

You can use any of the following formats:

  • YYYYMMDD (four digits for the filing year, two digits for the filing month and two digits for the filing day)

  • YYYYMM

  • YYYY

  • DD/MM/YYYY

  • MM/YYYY

  • YYYY-MM-DD

  • DD.MM.YYYY

  • MM.YYYY

For example, if you enter 19961023, you will find applications filed on 23 October 1996.

If you enter 199610, you will find applications filed in October 1996.

If you enter 1996, you will find applications filed in 1996.

A date range search is not possible in the Filing date field.
