Validation states

Validation states are countries that have signed a kind of agreement – known as a "validation agreement" – with the European Patent Organisation that provides for European patents to have effect in non-EPC contracting states.

To obtain patent protection in these countries, applicants have to submit a request and pay a validation fee within a set time limit. Once validated in these countries, European patent applications and patents will basically have the same effect there as national ones.

A complete list of validation states with which the EPO has signed validation agreements is available on the EPO website.
